Agrivoltaics in Germany

Germany is farming electricity. Fraunhofer ISE and VOEN Vöhringer GmbH are advancing agrivoltaics by installing solar panels above crops, like cherry orchards in Fronreute.

These elevated solar canopies generate up to 420 kilowatts per hectare while protecting crops from UV rays, hail, and rain.

The shade reduces irrigation needs and improves crop quality, utilizing existing greenhouse structures to cut costs and emissions.

Smart software optimizes both energy and crop production, with early results showing equal or better yields.

This dual-harvest approach is catching on fast across Europe and Asia, with Germany and Japan leading the charge.
